Name: Joy Ugi

Her 9-5: Orderly

Her After 5: Freelance writer, Blogger, Email Marketer & Speaker

Daily Routine:

My evening routine consists of spending at least 30 minutes exercising and 30 minutes reading. Exercise not only keeps my body happy and my self-confidence high, it helps me work off aches and pains caused by stress. Exercise also helps me clear my head and sleep better at night.

You can’t be a good writer unless you’re a good reader, which is why reading plays an important role in my routine. I read everything from Wired Magazine, to the latest marketing book, to historical fictions novels. Newspapers, blogs, community newsletters – I read it all! Just as exercise is good for the body, reading keeps me mentally in shape.

Why did you start freelancing?

After years of experience creating content, I saw needs popping up around me to teach and share about content marketing, as well as produce it in different capacities. One of my friends who is a strong, encouraging presence in my life helped push me to pursue this calling, which started me down that road.

What challenges have you faced with freelancing?

Finding the time to put 100% into my goals is the biggest challenge for me. Distractions abound, and it can be hard to stay focused.

Challenges faced climbing the corporate ladder:

The challenge I’ve faced is being verbally recognized by superiors for my hard work and gifts, but not being rewarded for them in a higher position or paycheck.

Favorite Quote:

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

3 Things in your purse you cannot live without:

Lip balm, my ID (who doesn’t like a cold one after a long day?), and my purse itself  {I’m way too frugal to buy anything name brand for myself, but my sweet sister knows how much I adore Kate Spade and got me one of her purses for a recent birthday.}

Advice I would give to my younger self:

Break the “rules” more often.

6 word memoir:

Words are my bread and butter.
